Get Help Winning the Benefits You Need

Living with lupus can be a confusing, painful and frustrating experience. When your immune system doesn’t work like it should, your whole body is affected.

It can be hard to diagnose, too. Symptoms are difficult to perceive. According to the Lupus Foundation of America, it takes an average of six years to even get a diagnosis.

For many suffering from lupus, working is impossible. It’s why you need Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. The monthly financial support can be a lifesaver when you’re unable to provide for you and your family.

Sadly, winning benefits can be hard. Most are denied on their initial application.

At Bothwell & Hamill, we’re proud to help our neighbors in Yakima, Kennewick, and all over Central Washington get the benefits they deserve.

How to Qualify for SSD with Lupus

Unfortunately, there’s no known cure for lupus.

Symptoms can vary wildly, from fatigue to joint pain to weight loss and everything in between. Here are the two requirements Social Security uses to qualify you for benefits with lupus:

1) You must show that you meet Social Security’s disability listing for systemic lupus erythematous (SLE) by demonstrating that:

  • Lupus is affecting two or more of your organs or body systems.
  • You experience at least two of these symptoms: fatigue, fever, malaise or involuntary weight loss.

2) Or, you must prove that your ability to function is limited by confirming that you experience at least two of the symptoms above, plus one of these conditions:

  • Limitation of your daily activities
  • Limitation in your ability to function socially
  • Limitation in completing tasks because of problems with concentration, sticking to tasks and keeping pace.

We know this can seem overwhelming. We’re here to help.

How to Prove Your Case to Social Security

Remember how most people get denied? Often, we see rejections due to lack of medical evidence or even presenting the right medical evidence improperly.

In order to win, you’ll need to supply things like:

  • Documentation of your diagnosis from a rheumatologist or a physician specializing in lupus
  • Test results that rule out other conditions
  • Doctor’s reports that describe your symptoms in detail.
  • Medical records that describe the treatments you’ve undergone and their effects
  • List of medications you’ve been prescribed and how they’ve worked
  • Test results for common complications of lupus
  • A diary of your symptoms
  • Any other treatment records

And if you’ve already been denied, know this: You can’t give up now. Social Security features a multi-level appeals system with chances to win at each juncture.

The compassionate, experienced disability lawyers at Bothwell & Hamill can help you at any step of the process—from application to appeal.
